Hold the BLM Accountable for its Vegetation Treatment Program on Western Public Lands

Dear [Decision Maker],

I'm writing to urge you to hold the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) accountable for its use of taxpayer dollars in its "vegetation treatment" program on public lands in the West.

Every year, the BLM spends tens of millions of taxpayer dollars destroying hundreds of thousands of acres of native pinyon and juniper forests and sagebrush stands throughout the West, including in sensitive places like national monuments and wilderness study areas. These projects are often paid for by funds intended for fire suppression, when in fact the primary purpose is to improve rangeland for cattle and big game.

Furthermore, there is little evidence to support the BLM's assertion that these projects improve forage or habitat for wildlife, or reduce stream erosion and runoff. The scientific evidence that these projects are beneficial is often contradictory, or non-existent.

These projects have a profound, lasting, and often detrimental impact to our public lands. Congress should insist that the BLM account for the efficacy of these projects, rather than wasting unrestricted money on bad ideas.

Sincerely,
