Paria Habitat Improvement Project

Dear [Decision Maker],

I'm writing in reference to the proposed Paria River Habitat Improvement Project, and to encourage the BLM to abandon the proposal at the scoping stage.

Vegetation removal practices destroy native vegetation and fragile soils, and negatively impact the natural and wilderness qualities of the landscape for decades. Mastication, in particular, is an extreme and unproven management approach that simply does not belong on our public lands.

This is especially true for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The project has the potential to harm monument resources, including soils, watersheds, and cultural sites on over 90,000 acres of public lands protected for their scientific, scenic, and historic values. Grand Staircase-Escalante--which was designed for the express purpose of ensuring that its remote, undeveloped, and rugged nature remains for generations--should never be the subject of aggressive and invasive large-scale vegetation removal.

I urge you to abandon this and future proposals to use heavy machinery for vegetation removal on Utah's public lands, including within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, thereby honoring your obligation to protect natural resources and wilderness values from this irreversible human-caused harm.
