Please stop chaining public lands and protect Grand Staircase-Escalante

I'm writing to ask you to end the environmentally-destructive and scientifically-unsound practice of chaining on Utah's BLM-managed public lands.

Chaining destroys native vegetation and fragile soils, and negatively impacts the natural and wilderness qualities of the landscape for decades. Chaining is an extreme and unproven management approach that simply does not belong on our public lands.

This is especially true for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, where the BLM has proposed to chain large sagebrush stands, ostensibly for the purpose of ecological restoration. The project not only lacks a scientific basis, but would also violate the clear language of the monument management plan.

Grand Staircase-Escalante--which was designed for the express purpose of ensuring that its remote, undeveloped, and rugged nature remains for generations--should never be the subject of such aggressive and invasive vegetation removal.

I urge you to abandon current and future proposals to chain on Utah's public lands, including within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, thereby honoring your obligation to protect natural resources and wilderness values from this irreversible human-caused harm.
